Hastac it\u2019s like this perfect storm.<\/p>\n
this is a voluntary organization that we started in 2002
\nof people who just thought<\/p>\n
that the way<\/p>\n
higher education is structured
\nnow
\nfirst of all
\nis still based on … these two cultures idea,
\nthat there\u2019s humanities \u00a0and arts<\/p>\n
on the one hand<\/p>\n
and deep critical thinking, those things that don\u2019t get you a job over here \/ and technology and science over here \/ and that\u2019s how you get a job and it doesn\u2019t involve deep critical thinking. \u00a0It\u2019s just about doing stuff.
\nThat\u2019s a<\/p>\n
disaster. I\u2019m sorry<\/p>\n
but you don\u2019t want to have the people making the technology not understanding the historical context and theoretical ideas
\nand you don\u2019t want people who do think about those things not getting a job.
\nI mean its a really bad vision that comes out of the industrial age and out of an industrial age idea. \u00a0It\u2019s certainly not how Newton did physics and theology in his era or Copernicus or anyone before the industrial age.<\/p>\n
So HASTAC is really designed as an acronym (said as though it were one word)<\/em><\/p>\nH-A-S-T-A-C Humanities,<\/p>\n
Arts,Science,&<\/p>\n
Technology Advanced Collboratory
\nit\u2019s about trying to put those things back together again.
\nWell, we were considered a renegade organization<\/p>\n
until about<\/p>\n
maybe last year
\nand now
\nwe\u2019re like the flavor of the month.
\nI mean every day it seems<\/p>\n
some crazy new invitation is coming asking for us to teach people to think in a different way<\/p>\n
and how to change the academy.<\/p>\n
